Project Description

On completion the Geelong Arts Centre will be Australia’s largest regional arts centre.  This exceptional and contemporary arts campus will quite literally throw open its doors to the street, heralding a new way of exploring culture for the public through its new reconfigurable, 500 seat theatre, 250 seat immersive studio theatre, activated foyer space and soundscapes, as well as upgraded box office, back-of-house and administration facilities.

The main 500 seat theatre has been structurally isolated to support flexible programming of performances, rehearsals and community events without concerns that low frequency production sound will be audible between venues.  The auditorium and its acoustics are reconfigurable to support end-on and thrust modes (with proscenium deployed) and in-the-round and ‘gig’ modes (proscenium retracted).  Infrastructure for a future acoustic enhancement system has been installed to ultimately enable the venue to vary its acoustic performance at the touch of a button to support all musical genres and experimental immersive audio installations.
